Diana Has Lowest Student per Teacher Ratio

A review of the most recent data available from the West Virginia Board of Education website shows what most already know: Diana Elementary has the lowest student per teacher ratio in the County, but not by much.

The most recent data (from the 2010-11 school year) shows the following (school, students per teacher ratio, and total students in school):
  • Diana Elementary: 10.2 (85)
  • Glade Elementary: 14.2 (325)
  • Glade Middle: 12.4 (214)
  • Hacker Valley Elementary: 10.9 (73)
  • Webster County High School: 13.4 (483)
  • Webster Springs Elementary: 10.6 (354)
According to the enrollment data, Webster County had a total of 1,534 students for the 2010-11 school year.  That same enrollment data shows a decrease for the 2012-13 school year to 1,493.

  1. I must challenge the numbers for Hacker Valley School. Their enrollment was (and still is ) about half the number quoted.

  2. Thanks for pointing out the obvious discrepancy. We have corrected the school by school student enrollment numbers and have included a link at the end of the article. The 140 student number was based on the administrator to student ratio, which had the unfortunate effect of doubling the student number. For the 2010-11 school year, HV had 73 students, and a student to teacher ratio of 10.9 students per teacher.

  3. Please tell me if I am wrong, but aren't the student enrollment numbers based on the enrollment as of the second month of the fiscal school year? And isn't the actual headcount calculated differently depending on the students that only count as "part time"? I believe that is where the state school aid formula gets it's calculations for the following year's funding level.

  4. The article lists what is on the WV Board of Education's website--that is our source. How numbers are reported is a question to ask local Board officials.

  5. I have spoken to "Board officials" about this very thing (along with surrounding county's "Board officials" and employees for the WVDE.) How numbers are reported and counted seems to be in State Policy. But, thank you for the links above, as State Policy and WV code are so large, this will save your readers the time and frustration in researching it.
