Jail Bill Continues to Drain County Coffers

For the second month in a row, the West Virginia Regional Jail Authority has billed Webster County in excess of $50,000.00 for housing Webster inmates.

For December, 2012, the county owes $57,828.00, representing 1,185 inmate days at $48.80 per day. Of the month's total, $45,335.20 (or 78%) was for inmates charged with felonies and $12,492.80 (or 22%) was for inmates charged or convicted of misdemeanors.

If news of the December jail bill was not bad enough, the total jail bill for the first half of the current fiscal year (from July 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012) is even more shocking. For this six month period, the County has paid or owes (including December) a total of $371,239.00. If the second half of the fiscal year, which ends June 30, 2013, has a similar amount, the County will have run up a jail bill for the year of over $742,000.00, which would set an all-time jail bill record. Considering that the County's total budget for the past fiscal year was $3.3 million, the projected current fiscal year's bill of $742,000.00 would amount to 22.5% of the total budget.

Below is a list of the inmates and the days they spent in the Regional Jail for December.

  1. Yep, looks like the Magistrates in this county are not too worried about the jails budget. Is it true that this is a cash bond county only? Meaning that bond set at $100,000 dollars require that amount in cash only, no property is accepted. Or of-course, these fine well to do criminals can get themselves a bail bondsman at 10% kissing that $1,000.00 goodbye. Is it possible that house arrest with ankle bands be a consideration, along with accepting property for bond? What is being considered to get this under control. That amount over budget would make a fine salary for someone to monitor house arrest issues.

  2. The Magistrates in Webster dont care what it costs the tax payers or the county. There are other options to ensure that the accused will appear to court. The Magistrates will not utilize other options because they think they are reducing crime by putting everyone in jail. In Webster you are guilty and have top prove your innocence. They are both old and narrow minded fools that have no clue how to govern or protect our county properly & fairly.

  3. Well anyone can see that Anonymous is really a family member who has a Drug addicted son or daughter that no longer beats the Police Officers back from the Regional Jail as it was in the past!or maybe a distraught defense attorney that can no longer make a bucket of money from the tax payers as before.just look at an earlier post on the Commentator about the money that is wasted on Court Appointed Attorneys. Ask any of the police officers what County they would rather work in here or the other Counties that turn loose the Meth Cookers as many as 4 or 5 times in one month.only to be re-arrested again and again.I and many other people think that John and Rich are the best Magistrates that we have ever had.keep up the good work Guy's and don't let the foul words of this ''Two Legged'' Manure spreader discourage you !
