Brett Morris Becomes All-Time Leading Scorer for Webster as Highlanders Coast Over Richwood

Before a near capacity crowd at the Highlander's gym Friday evening, senior Brett Morris broke a 20 year record to become the all-time leading scorer for boy's basketball in the 39 year history of the school, and led his team to an easy win over the Richwood Lumberjacks 80 to 57.

quarter of the Highlanders' rout of the Richwood Lumberjacks.
Morris, who finished the game with 33 points leading all scorers, made the first two points of the game. With those first two points, Morris brought his career scoring total to 1,225 points, breaking the record of 1,223 points previously set by T.J. Martin 20 years ago. With his game total, he now has 1,256 career points.

For a near capacity crowd, it was strangely quiet for the most part because the Highlanders took the crowd out of the game by running up a 20 to 5 first quarter lead. At halftime, Morris had 20 points and Webster maintained a comfortable 40 to 15 lead. Richwood inched closer in the third quarter, but trailed by 20 points at 54 to 34 and both benches saw a lot of action in the fourth quarter as Webster coasted to the 80 to 57 win.

In the fourth quarter, it appeared that head coach Jerry Dean put Morris back into the game despite the big lead as sort of a reward for his record breaking performance. Morris collected on the reward when teammates Stephen Cogar and Hunter Given led a fast break with one thought in mind: a slam dunk by a trailing Morris. Cogar passed to an open Given who tossed the ball high near the rim and Morris obliged by slamming the ball through the iron with both hands to the great delight of the crowd.

For the third game in a row, junior Dalton Davis turned in another strong performance. Davis finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 1 assist. In addition to his 33 points, Morris tallied 7 rebounds, 5 blocked shots, 3 steals, and 2 assists. Senior Hunter Given contributed 9 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals, rounding out Webster's tall threesome.

Others seeing action for the Highlanders on the stat sheet included: Robbie Cogar, 5 points, 2 rebounds; Lance Stout, 5 points, 1 steal, 1 blocked shot; Tyler Anderson, 5 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist; David Muzny, 5 points, 1 rebound; Logan Taylor, 4 points, 5 rebounds; Stephen Cogar, 3 points, 2 steals, 1 rebound; Guy Cowger, 1 steal; and Rick Holcomb, 2 rebounds.

As a team, Webster made 48% of their shot attempts. At the foul line, Webster made only 11 of 26 free throws (42%).

With the win, Webster improved to 6 wins, 1 loss on the season. They now travel to Ravenswood to take on the Red Devils on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. Ravenswood sports a 2 win, 6 loss record. At 5:45 p.m. before the boys' game, the Lady Highlanders will take on the Lady Red Devils of Ravenswood.

On Tuesday, January 15, 2013, the Highlander boys' team travels to the Braxton Armory  below Sutton to take on the Braxton County Eagles with the same start times.

The junior varsity squad coached by Eddie Mazzella also had an easy time with the Richwood JV's, defeating them 67 to 30.
