The West Virginia Department of Education has named the Diana Elementary School as one of its twelve "Distinguished Schools" in the entire State of West Virginia.
To be eligible for this award, Diana must have met these criteria set forth for the award:
• Be in operation for at least three or more consecutive years;
• Participated in a Title I program for three or more consecutive years;
• Acquire full West Virginia accreditation status;
• Achieved AYP [Annual Yearly Progress] separately in reading and math for three or more consecutive years. (K-2 Title I schools must make AYP for three or more consecutive years as determined by the West Virginia Office of Performance Audits); and
• Demonstrate 60% proficient for the all subgroup in both reading/language arts and mathematics based on 10 or more students tested (“n” count for reporting assessment data). N/A for K-2 schools.
Here are the twelve schools which received this award (school, county of school, & grade span of school):
- Collier Primary School, Brooke, K-04
- Big Otter Elementary, Clay, K-05
- White Sulphur Elementary, Greenbrier, PK-05
- South Man Elementary, Logan, K-03
- Madison Elementary, Ohio, PK-05
- North Fork Elementary, Pendleton, K-06

- Cresent Elementary, Raleigh, PK-05
- Diana Elementary, Webster, K-08
- Neale Elementary, Wood, K-5

Many Diana supporters are questioning why this award was not made public prior to the recent public meeting at Diana on the now withdrawn school consolidation plan.
Looks like we were the only k-8 school in the state to do it.
ReplyDeleteThe only school in the county to recieve the award. Wow. I think that says a lot for our little school! Very proud of all the students, teachers, and parents! Keep up the good work Diana Elementary!! That is awesome!! :)
ReplyDeleteSorry, I hope my first reply will go unpublished for accidentally pressing the publish button too soon. Again, as I stated in my first reply that I am a Webster County citizen who is very concerned about our children's education in this county. With that said I have to say that I am impressed with Diana Elementary's outstanding achievement for this year as well as the past several years. As a citizen of this county I feel this school should be recognized for such an achievement that 600 plus schools could not attain. Why in the world would we try and close a school with so much to offer our kids? It goes without saying that this school is doing something right! We need to use this school to help other schools in not just our county but in our state! We have four other fantastic schools in this county that are just as important. I would like for these schools to excel as well! Why aren't we working together to help all our children in the county? Why would we close a school that we can learn from? Obviously, small schools work. Consolidation is out! Let's find a way to help our kids, they are counting on us to do what is right!
ReplyDeleteLooks like our little school, that they feel the need to close down is doing very well, and we are very proud.
ReplyDeleteThe Diana school should have excellent scores with a student/teacher ratio so low. I feel the rest of the kids in our county should have the same student/teacher ratio and be treated the same. It appears that the selfish Diana school parents think they are better and should keep this situation and the rest of our kids have to suffer without the same kind of help. This is not fair and something should be done about it.

ReplyDelete--In response, yes, something should be done about it. Make your teachers accountable. Get your parents involved. Then your test scores will improve. Diana is anything but selfish. The school deserves recognition. They are a group of hard-working students and staff that respect one another. Did you know they even respect your opinion, no matter how ignorant it is?
To the above, if you are stating that test scores and good student achievement is achieved with small class size than how can you be for consolidation? If you are in favor of merging the schools than you can kiss small class size goodbye! If this consolidation happens there will be at least 25 to 30 students per class/per one teacher. If good understanding of content taught and less disruptive environment to learn in is what you want for your child than you should fight to keep not only Diana open but for the other schools to not gain anymore students per room than they already have! There has been a lot of complaints over too many kids in some of the classrooms already at Webster. Thnk about what kind of learning environment you learn best in.
DeleteFond memories of Diana Grade School back in the 70's. I have thought that I owe many thanks to my teachers there. Mr. Ware, Mr. Ezell, and Mr. Matheny as well as Mrs. Mathes had me well prepared when I moved away and entered a much larger school system.
ReplyDeleteTeaching the test helps, too.
