Pocahontas County Ideal Spot for "Day-cation"

Webster County residents can enjoy a "day-cation" in neighboring Pocahontas County.

Several significant sites can be visited in just one day, starting on Route 219 in Pocahontas County near Slatyfork. Webster residents can find the "fountain source" of the Elk River along the Big Spring Fork of the Elk at the famous "split rock," where water bubbles up from the ground and flows as one fork of the Elk.  The split rock is located about one mile north of the Slatyfork post office.  Just a few yards below the post office is the historic Sharp's Country Store, where visitors can see all types of antiques, including old glass site fuel pumps.

Approaching Marlinton, the county seat of Pocahontas County, visitors can take a drive on the always inviting Highland Scenic Highway, and enjoy the many vistas along the road.  At the southern end of the Highway, the Cranberry Glades and the three Falls of Hill Creek await the more adventurous outdoor lovers.  A quick drive back north toward Marlinton will lead travelers to the intersection at Millpoint and its old time grist mill.  Leaving the mill going south toward Greenbrier County, visitors can see the Pearl Buck birthplace, the quaint town of Hillsboro, and then travel up the mountain to visit the Civil War era Droop Mountain battlefield and the unusual rock formations of Beartown State park.  These are just some of the sites to be found in southern Pocahontas County.
