17 Year Locust Invade Parts of Webster County

Cicada coming out of its shell near
Diana on May 13, 2016.
A species of the 17 year Locust, known as "Brood V" cicadas, are beginning to appear in various parts of Webster County.

Cicadas appear in May and early June every 17 or 13 years depending on the specific brood.  There are at least seven known broods, so many Webster residents will see cicadas every few years.

Cicadas live only a few weeks, so after they begin to emerge, the whole cicada event will last only four to six weeks.  Cicadas are known for their loud mating calls throughout the day.
