The Commentator has confirmed this morning with a source close to the Webster County Board of Education that the new school consolidation plan that is on the Board's agenda for its upcoming meeting on Tuesday, February 14, 2013, is the same plan that was previously proposed, with the legal technicalities previously found objectionable apparently corrected.
Readers will recall that the old plan withdrawn on December 18, 2012 proposed the closure of the Diana Elementary School and the Glade Middle School, with all seventh and eighth grade students in the County (except for Hacker Valley) to be transferred to the Webster County High School. Students from Diana would be sent to Webster Springs or Hacker Valley. The new plan has the same proposals.
Keep up the good reporting. Please
ReplyDeleteThere have been several teachers whom have been told they will not have jobs next year. Secretarial positions will be cut as well. Will this not balance the budget? Is this not the reason the consolidation and closings were taking place? I think the BOE needs to reevaluate the Superintendent's position and possibly find a replacement. Voters need to think about new BOE members too. There is too much malarkey going on.
ReplyDeleteTo answer the question of Concerned Parent, no it will not balance the budget. Apparently you overestimate what these people make and how those jobs are funded. In addition to position cuts, there will likely be programmatic cuts and changes. Unless the federal budget cuts don't occur and we look at ways to serve all of our students with equity (consolidation), we can pretty much count on the trend continuing for next year.
ReplyDeleteTo Anonymous...apparently you overestimate that such consolidation plans work. Have you researched other school systems and the problems that have transpired? Or are you just interested in numbers and dollar signs? This is obviously a matter that will affect the overall education of all Webster County students. I am just not convinced this is the only option.
