Three Webster County eighth grade students have been honored as recipients of the annual Golden Horseshoe award.
Sierra Davis, Michael McCartney, and Jeremiah McCourt were dubbed Knights and Ladies of the Golden Horseshoe at a ceremony in Charleston on May 6.
While in Charleston to celebrate the Golden Horseshoe Day, the three honorees were treated to a tour of the Capitol and Cultural Center and a luncheon held in their honor. The high point of the Golden Horseshoe Ceremony was the induction of the students into the Golden Horseshoe Society. The State Superintendent of Schools presided over the induction ceremony. Each student kneels and, with a tap of a sword on the shoulder, is dubbed either a Knight or Lady of the Golden Horseshoe Society. Each student was presented a Golden Horseshoe pin and the 70-year honor and tradition continues.
The Golden Horseshoe program begin in 1931 to promote appreciation of West Virginia history, and to honor students who excel in the study of West Virginia. Each of West Virginia's 55 counties have at least two winners each year after students are given a series of tests to judge their academic abilities in the history of West Virginia.
